Ingles Market
Ingles Markets, Incorporated (NASDAQ: IMKTA) is a leading regional supermarket chain headquartered in Black Mountain, North Carolina — a family-founded, publicly traded, locally rooted grocer that has served the Appalachian region of the Southeastern United States for more than 60 years. Founded in 1963 by Robert P. “Bob” Ingle — a third-generation grocery man whose grandfather started an Asheville, NC grocery store decades earlier — Ingles opened its first store on Hendersonville Road in Asheville and built the company from the ground up through a high-volume, low-margin, community-first retail philosophy. Today Ingles operates 197–200 supermarkets across six southeastern states — North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia, and Alabama — with all stores concentrated within 250 miles of its massive 1,649,000-square-foot distribution campus on the outskirts of Asheville, one of the largest grocery warehousing and distribution complexes in the Southeast. Ingles is majority controlled by the Ingle family and is led by Chairman Robert P. Ingle II (son of founder Bob Ingle), with James W. Lanning serving as President and CEO.
Ingles Markets delivered notably strong financial results in fiscal 2026. In Q1 fiscal 2026 (quarter ended December 27, 2025), net sales grew 6.6% to $1.37 billion and net income jumped to $28.1 million — up from $16.6 million in Q1 fiscal 2025. In Q2 fiscal 2026 (quarter ended March 28, 2026), net sales dipped slightly 1.8% to $1.31 billion, but net income surged 61% to $24.3 million (versus $15.1 million a year prior) on the strength of improved gross margins (24.9% vs. 23.4%) and lower interest expenses. For the first half of fiscal 2026, Ingles reported net sales of $2.68 billion (+2.4% year-over-year) and net income of $52.4 million ($2.76 diluted EPS), sharply up from $31.7 million ($1.67 diluted EPS) in the same period of fiscal 2025. Total debt declined to $503.8 million by March 28, 2026, down from $521.6 million a year prior, reflecting solid balance sheet improvement. Three of four stores damaged by Hurricane Helene remain closed pending reopening during 2026–2027.

Ingles Markets has been headquartered in the Asheville, North Carolina area since its founding in 1963 — a proud reflection of the company’s deep roots and unwavering commitment to the western North Carolina mountain community it was born in. The primary headquarters campus is located at 2913 US Highway 70 W (also referenced as 550 NC-9) in Black Mountain, North Carolina — a small mountain town approximately 15 miles east of downtown Asheville, nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains just off Interstate 40. The campus encompasses an extraordinary 1,649,000-square-foot facility on 119 acres strategically situated between Interstate 40 and Highway 70 — housing the corporate headquarters offices, the warehouse and distribution center serving all 197–200 Ingles stores, truck servicing facilities, and fuel storage infrastructure. The distribution center is within 250 miles of every single Ingles store in the system, making the Black Mountain location a critical operational anchor for the company’s entire retail footprint.
