Amtrak
Amtrak, formally the National Railroad Passenger Corporation, is the United States’ national intercity passenger railroad. It provides long-distance, Northeast Corridor, and state-supported train service connecting hundreds of destinations across the country and portions of Canada. Current official information states that Amtrak operates over roughly 21,000 route miles, serves more than 500 destinations, and operates more than 300 trains each day.
Amtrak was created by Congress and began service in 1971, taking over many intercity passenger routes that had previously been operated by private railroads. It operates under a unique federally chartered corporate structure and receives federal and state funding while also generating significant passenger and operating revenue. In fiscal 2025, Amtrak set a new all-time record with 34.5 million customer trips and approximately $3.9 billion in operating revenue.
Amtrak entered another leadership transition in 2026. Roger Harris departed at the end of July 2026, and Byl Herrmann became Interim President while the Board conducts a search for a permanent Chief Executive Officer. Amtrak continues major fleet and infrastructure modernization, including NextGen Acela, new Airo trainsets, station projects, bridges, and corridor expansion.

If the issue requires formal Customer Relations rather than ordinary reservation assistance, call the same number and ask for the Customer Relations Desk. Amtrak’s corporate travel information explicitly directs customers to do this. Guest Rewards account or points matters should instead use 1-800-307-5000, while groups of 15 or more should use 1-800-872-1477.

Complaints can involve delays, cancellations, customer service, refunds, baggage, accessibility, station conditions, Guest Rewards, onboard service, or safety. Keep the reservation number, train number, travel date, ticket receipt, photographs, written communications, and names of employees previously contacted.
Call 1-800-872-7245 and explain the complaint to a Customer Service representative. Provide your reservation information and the exact train and date involved, and request that the issue be documented.
Guest Rewards complaints should use 1-800-307-5000, group-travel issues 1-800-872-1477, and accessibility concerns can be handled through the accessibility option at 1-800-872-7245. Safety matters should go to Amtrak Police.
If the first representative cannot resolve the issue, ask for a supervisor or the Customer Relations Desk. Explain what has already happened and the exact remedy you are seeking, such as a refund review, travel credit, account correction, or investigation.
Submit feedback through Amtrak’s official Contact Us system. Written complaints are particularly useful for detailed service failures, accessibility problems, or cases involving supporting documents because they create a clear record for later escalation.
Formal correspondence can be sent to Office of Customer Relations, 1 Massachusetts Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20001. Include the reservation number, travel dates, complaint history, and copies of supporting documentation.
For serious unresolved service matters, request review by Customer Relations rather than remaining solely with the reservations queue. Accessibility complaints should be identified specifically as accessibility requests or feedback so they are routed through Amtrak’s established process.
Rail safety matters may fall under the Federal Railroad Administration, while certain transportation accessibility complaints can involve the U.S. Department of Transportation. The correct regulator depends on whether the issue concerns passenger service, disability rights, safety, or another regulated subject.
If a charge remains disputed after Amtrak’s internal review, contact the payment-card issuer where appropriate. General consumer issues may also be raised with relevant state consumer-protection authorities, especially when the dispute concerns a transaction rather than railroad operations.
Before pursuing formal legal remedies, review Amtrak’s current Conditions of Carriage and any fare or program terms governing the trip. Preserve tickets, receipts, correspondence, and records of attempted resolution, and obtain legal advice where the claim is significant or involves personal injury, contractual rights, or other complex issues.
