State Employees Credit Union
State Employees’ Credit Union, commonly known as SECU, is a North Carolina-based, member-owned, not-for-profit financial cooperative. SECU was founded in Raleigh on June 4, 1937, with only 17 members and $437 in deposits. Its original purpose was to provide affordable financial services to employees of the State of North Carolina. Over the decades, eligibility expanded to include many public employees, qualifying family members, and other eligible groups while the organization remained focused on its cooperative “People Helping People®” philosophy.
SECU is now one of the largest credit unions in the United States. Current 2026 information shows approximately $60 billion in assets, 3 million member-owners, 275 branch locations, and more than 1,000 CashPoints ATMs across North Carolina. It offers checking and savings accounts, mortgages, auto and personal loans, credit cards, digital banking, insurance services, investments, retirement planning, trust services, financial education, and other member-focused financial products.
SECU remains a member-owned cooperative rather than a publicly traded bank. Its current President and CEO is Leigh Brady, who has spent decades with the organization and became CEO in 2023. SECU passed the three-million-member milestone in July 2026 and continues to operate a statewide branch and digital-service network while investing in technology, member service, and community programs through the SECU Foundation.

SECU offers checking accounts for everyday spending, deposits, withdrawals, bill payments, debit-card purchases, direct deposit, and digital banking. Members can manage qualifying checking accounts through branches, Member Access, the SECU Mobile App, ATMs, and phone services.
SECU provides share and savings accounts designed for short-term savings, emergency reserves, youth savings, and longer-term financial goals. Because SECU is a cooperative, maintaining the required share account is also part of establishing membership.
Money market accounts provide members with an additional savings option for larger cash balances. They are designed to offer convenient access while earning dividends according to SECU’s current account terms and rates.
SECU offers share-term certificates for members who want to earn a fixed or defined dividend rate over a specified term. These products are commonly used by members who do not need immediate access to the deposited funds.
SECU provides financing for new and used vehicles. Members can apply for auto loans through digital channels, by phone, or at branches, subject to credit approval and current lending terms.
Personal lending products are available for members who need funds for qualifying household expenses, emergencies, consolidation, or other personal needs. SECU emphasizes individual underwriting and member-focused lending review rather than relying solely on automated denial decisions.
SECU offers first mortgages, refinancing, adjustable-rate and fixed-rate options, home equity products, and related home-financing services. SECU has become one of North Carolina’s largest mortgage lenders and supports members through application, closing, and servicing.
Homeowners can use qualifying home equity to borrow for renovations, large expenses, debt consolidation, or other needs. Available products include traditional home equity loans and home equity lines of credit.
SECU offers Visa credit cards including rewards-based products. Members can apply online, over the phone, or through a local branch and can manage payments and transaction disputes through Member Access or Member Services.
SECU debit cards provide direct access to checking funds for purchases and ATM transactions. Members can use Card Lock, report lost or stolen cards, and manage eligible card services digitally or through Member Services.
Member Access is SECU’s digital banking platform for balances, transfers, statements, secure messaging, card management, BillPay, and other account services. The platform works through web browsers and integrates with the SECU Mobile App.
The SECU Mobile App allows members to access accounts, transfer money, deposit eligible checks, manage cards, view statements, send secure messages, and use many of the same tools available in Member Access.
ASK SECU is SECU’s automated telephone banking service available 24/7. Members can check balances, review recent transactions, confirm loan payments, transfer funds, and access other account information by phone.
SECU Insurance Services helps members evaluate insurance needs and access qualifying insurance products. Current service areas can include auto, homeowners, life, and other personal insurance coverage through approved providers.
Financial Advisory Services supports members with retirement planning, education planning, financial goals, investment considerations, and insurance needs. The dedicated Financial Advisory Services Contact Center provides extended service hours.
Credit Union Investment Services and SECU Brokerage Services provide qualifying members with investment-advisory and brokerage products. Investments are separate from credit-union deposits and are not NCUA-insured.
SECU provides access to trust and estate planning services designed to help members manage assets, beneficiary arrangements, estate planning, and long-term family financial needs.
Safe deposit boxes are available at many SECU branches, subject to local availability. Members can use them to store important documents and other valuables.
SECU provides financial education to members and communities through seminars, educational resources, youth programs, and other outreach. The organization held more than 1,400 financial-education sessions during its 2025 reporting period.

The best first number for most SECU issues is 888-732-8562. This 24/7 Member Services Support line can assist with account access, deposits, card concerns, transfers, fraud, lost or stolen cards, general banking questions, and routing to more specialized departments. Members should have identification information, the affected account type, transaction date, relevant amount, and any existing case information available before calling.
For lending questions, call the Lending Contact Center at 844-296-4831. Financial planning and insurance inquiries can use 833-599-7328. If the issue involves a mortgage servicing error, credit reporting dispute, bankruptcy, or other specialized servicing matter, SECU publishes dedicated written channels on its Contact Us page and these should be used when the issue requires a formal record.
Members who prefer in-person assistance can visit any of SECU’s 275 branches across North Carolina. Branches typically operate Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM ET, and the local branch can often resolve identity verification, lending, cash, account, card, and membership issues that are difficult to complete by phone.
SECU complaints can involve account servicing, unauthorized transactions, card disputes, loan decisions, mortgage servicing, fees, credit reporting, fraud, investments, insurance, branch service, or other financial matters. Before escalating, gather account statements, transaction dates, receipts, loan documents, correspondence, screenshots, case numbers, and the names or locations of employees previously contacted.
Call 888-732-8562 and explain the complaint to Member Services Support. Provide the affected account type, transaction or loan details, dates, and the resolution you are seeking. Ask the representative to document the issue and confirm whether a case, dispute, or service request has been created. SECU also allows members to send secure messages through Member Access, which can provide a useful written record.
Use the specialized department connected to the complaint. Lending complaints can use 844-296-4831, investment matters can use 800-451-5467, financial-advisory and insurance concerns can use 833-599-7328, while mortgage servicing errors and credit-report disputes should follow SECU’s published written procedures. Sending the complaint to the correct department generally makes it easier for SECU to review the specific records involved.
If the first representative cannot resolve the issue, request escalation to a supervisor, branch manager, lending officer, servicing manager, or other appropriate decision-maker. Give the reviewer the existing case details and a short chronology of what happened. For a branch complaint, contacting the branch manager directly can be especially effective because the manager can review local transactions and employee interactions.
SECU explicitly invites members to submit suggestions or complaints by secure message, while non-members can email info@ncsecu.org. A written complaint should state the account or service involved, important dates, previous support contacts, what you believe went wrong, and the remedy requested. Do not send passwords, full card numbers, or other unnecessary sensitive credentials through ordinary email.
For a serious unresolved complaint, send written correspondence to State Employees’ Credit Union, 119 N. Salisbury Street, Raleigh, NC 27603, or use the applicable corporate mailing address. Include copies of supporting records and reference earlier case numbers. A written corporate escalation is most useful when the problem has already been reviewed by Member Services and the relevant department.
For disputes involving online services, SECU’s current agreement provides a formal Claim Notice address at Attn: CLAIM NOTICE, P.O. Box 28327, Raleigh, NC 27611 and requires a reasonable opportunity to resolve the claim before certain arbitration or court proceedings. Credit-report, mortgage-servicing, bankruptcy, card, and investment complaints can also have separate written channels, so use the process matching the dispute.
If SECU does not adequately resolve the complaint, the organization itself points members to the North Carolina Credit Union Division or the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The proper regulator depends on whether the issue involves credit-union supervision, mortgages, lending, consumer accounts, debt servicing, or another regulated financial activity.
Card-payment disputes, identity theft, credit reporting issues, and other financial complaints may also involve the card network, credit bureaus, identity-theft reporting systems, or appropriate state consumer-protection authorities. Preserve statements, dispute notices, credit reports, fraud reports, and SECU responses so that the external reviewer can understand the full history.
If the dispute still cannot be resolved, review the agreement governing the specific account or digital service. SECU’s current Online Services Agreement contains an arbitration provision and requires a Claim Notice before initiating certain legal or arbitration proceedings. Because rights and deadlines depend on the agreement and dispute, consumers considering formal legal action may want independent legal advice before proceeding.
