About the University of Georgia
The University of Georgia (UGA) is America’s first public university — a landmark public land-grant research institution chartered on January 27, 1785, by the Georgia General Assembly, making it the first state-chartered public university in the United States and the model for public higher education that inspired every state university system that followed. UGA is the flagship institution of the University System of Georgia, a nationally recognized R1 Doctoral University (the Carnegie Classification’s highest research designation), and a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU). Located on a 762-acre main campus adjacent to the vibrant college town of Athens, Georgia — approximately 60 miles northeast of Atlanta — UGA is led by President Jere W. Morehead, who has served as the university’s 22nd president since 2013.
In fall 2025, UGA enrolled a record 43,888 students — up 1.7% year-over-year — with Georgians representing 83% of all undergraduate students, reflecting UGA’s core mission as Georgia’s flagship public institution. For the 10th consecutive year, U.S. News & World Report ranked UGA among the nation’s top 20 public universities in its 2025–2026 rankings, and the Princeton Review ranked UGA No. 12 among the top 50 best value public universities. Most notably, UGA’s Jere W. Morehead Honors College was ranked No. 1 in the nation for the second consecutive year by College Transitions. UGA received over $300.2 million in contributions from alumni and friends in 2025 — reflecting the university’s exceptional philanthropic momentum under President Morehead’s leadership.
