About Navy Federal Credit Union

Navy Federal Credit Union (NFCU) is the world’s largest credit union — and one of the most trusted financial institutions in the United States — serving members of the U.S. Armed Forces, Department of Defense, Coast Guard, veterans, and their families with world-class banking, lending, and investment services. Founded on January 17, 1933, as the Navy Department Employees’ Credit Union of the District of Columbia with just seven members and $7 in deposits, Navy Federal has grown over nine decades into a financial giant with 15,350,733 members, $203.6 billion in total assets, $173.2 billion in deposits, and $144.5 billion in loans outstanding as of Q1 2026. The credit union is chartered and regulated under the authority of the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), operates as a not-for-profit member-owned financial cooperative, and is federally insured by the NCUA. Navy Federal is headquartered at 820 Follin Lane SE in Vienna, Virginia — a Fairfax County suburb of Washington, D.C. — and is led by President and CEO Dietrich Kuhlmann, who was appointed on March 1, 2024, succeeding longtime CEO Mary McDuffie. Navy Federal generates approximately $5.9 billion in annual revenue and employs more than 25,000 associates across campuses in Vienna, Pensacola, Winchester, and San Diego, as well as 370+ branches and ATMs worldwide including locations on U.S. military installations overseas.

How to File a Complaint Against Navy Federal Credit Union

Step 1 — Contact Member Services Directly
Call Navy Federal’s 24/7 member service line at 1-888-842-6328. Clearly explain your complaint, provide your member number, and ask the representative to formally log your concern and provide a case reference number. Most billing errors, loan servicing issues, fee disputes, and account access problems can be initiated at this first stage.

Step 2 — Request Escalation to a Supervisor
If the first representative cannot resolve your complaint, ask immediately to be transferred to a supervisor or a member advocate. Supervisors have broader authority to issue fee waivers, approve exception credits, and escalate unresolved account issues to a specialist team. Always document the supervisor’s name, date and time of contact, and all commitments made.

Step 3 — Submit a Secure Written Message
Log in to your Navy Federal account at navyfederal.org and use the Secure Message Center to submit a formal written complaint. This creates a permanent documented record within your account and typically generates a response within 1 to 3 business days. Include your member number, a detailed description of the issue, all previous contacts made, and the specific resolution you are requesting.

Step 4 — Write to the Corporate Headquarters
For a formal written complaint, write to Navy Federal Credit Union, P.O. Box 3000, Merrifield, VA 22119-3000, or for delivery/express mail: 820 Follin Lane SE, Vienna, VA 22180-4907. Include your full name, member number, a detailed description of the issue, all previous contacts made, and the specific resolution you are seeking.

Step 5 — File a Complaint With the NCUA
Navy Federal is chartered and regulated by the National Credit Union Administration. File a formal complaint at ncua.gov or by calling the NCUA’s consumer assistance hotline at 1-800-755-1030. The NCUA requires Navy Federal to investigate and formally respond to your complaint. This is the primary federal regulator for all credit union complaints.

Step 6 — File a Complaint With the CFPB
File a formal complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau at consumerfinance.gov/complaint or by calling 1-855-411-2372. The CFPB requires Navy Federal to respond within 15 calendar days and publishes all complaint data publicly, creating a permanent federal record of your issue.

Step 7 — File a Complaint With the FTC
For complaints involving deceptive practices, unauthorized charges, or identity theft-related issues, file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov or by calling 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357). The FTC reviews consumer protection complaints in the financial services sector and can pursue enforcement action against institutions engaged in systemic unfair practices.

Step 8 — Contact the Virginia State Corporation Commission
For Virginia-based members with unresolved complaints involving state-chartered financial operations, contact the Virginia State Corporation Commission’s Bureau of Financial Institutions at scc.virginia.gov/bfi or by calling (804) 371-9657
