Southwest Airlines
Southwest Airlines Co. is a major U.S. passenger airline headquartered in Dallas, Texas. The company began commercial service on June 18, 1971, initially operating three Boeing 737 aircraft between Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. Southwest built its reputation around simplified air travel, a single-aircraft-family strategy centered on the Boeing 737, point-to-point flying, customer-friendly policies, and a distinctive employee-focused corporate culture.
Today, Southwest operates a large domestic and near-international network. As of September 30, 2026, the company reported a fleet of 803 Boeing 737 aircraft serving 120 destinations, while its broader investor profile reports service across roughly 121 airports in 12 countries depending on reporting period and schedule. Southwest carried more than 134 million customers in 2025 and had more than 73,000 full-time-equivalent active employees as of March 31, 2026.
Southwest is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange under ticker LUV. Current President, CEO, and Vice Chairman Bob Jordan is leading one of the most significant transformations in the airline’s history, including assigned seating, premium seating, revised fare bundles, expanded distribution, redeye flying, international airline partnerships, and the new Getaways by Southwest vacation platform.

For most reservations, ticketing, flight changes, travel questions, and general customer support, call 1-800-435-9792, also known as 1-800-I-FLY-SWA. Have the confirmation number, passenger name, travel dates, origin and destination airports, Rapid Rewards number if relevant, and the payment method used for booking available before speaking with the representative.
Use specialized numbers when the issue falls into a separate program. Rapid Rewards customers can call 800-445-5764, Group Travel uses 800-433-5368, and Getaways by Southwest uses 833-792-4899. Travelers with delayed or damaged baggage should report the matter promptly at the airport Baggage Service Office or through Southwest’s baggage-reporting tools because time limits apply to claims.
For disability-related issues, ask specifically for Southwest’s Complaint Resolution Official, or CRO. Federal rules require airlines to have CRO support available during operating hours for disability-related complaints. Travelers who cannot resolve a time-sensitive accessibility problem can also contact the U.S. Department of Transportation disability hotline.
Southwest complaints may involve canceled or delayed flights, baggage, refunds, seating, boarding, disability accommodations, Rapid Rewards, staff conduct, ticketing, vacation packages, or another travel-service issue. Keep the confirmation number, passenger names, ticket receipt, flight numbers, dates, baggage claim documents, screenshots, receipts for additional expenses, and earlier correspondence before escalating.
Start with 800-435-9792 and give Southwest an opportunity to resolve the issue directly. If the complaint arises while you are at an airport, first speak with the Customer Service Agent, gate agent, baggage representative, or another appropriate station employee because many problems can be handled immediately. Record the employee’s name, flight details, and any compensation or solution offered.
Use the specialized department connected to the complaint. Baggage problems should go through Southwest’s Baggage Service Office and claim process, Rapid Rewards issues through 800-445-5764, Group Travel through 800-433-5368, and Getaways complaints through 833-792-4899. Using the correct channel makes it easier for Southwest to access the relevant reservation and service records.
If the initial representative cannot resolve the problem, request a supervisor or management review. Explain what the previous representative offered, why that resolution is insufficient, and what specific remedy you believe is appropriate. For an airport incident, request a station supervisor. For disability-related matters, specifically request a Complaint Resolution Official, who has authority to address accessibility complaints.
Submit a written complaint through Southwest’s official Customer Relations or Contact Us process. Include the confirmation number, flight number, dates, passengers, origin and destination, earlier contact history, supporting receipts, and the requested resolution. Written complaints are important because federal rules require airlines to acknowledge qualifying written consumer complaints within 30 days and provide a substantive response within 60 days.
For serious unresolved issues, correspondence may be directed to Southwest Airlines Co., P.O. Box 36611, Dallas, TX 75235-1611. Identify the complaint as a Customer Relations matter and include copies of the relevant records. The physical headquarters is at 2702 Love Field Drive, Dallas, TX 75235, but the official corporate mailing address remains the P.O. Box used in company filings.
Certain disputes require specialized review. Baggage claims have strict notification deadlines, while disability issues should be escalated to the CRO. Refund or ticket disputes should include the fare purchased, cancellation circumstances, payment method, and previous refund request. Rapid Rewards or Getaways disputes should remain within the relevant program’s support channel so the correct account history can be reviewed.
If Southwest does not resolve an airline-service complaint, customers can file with the U.S. Department of Transportation Office of Aviation Consumer Protection. DOT handles complaints about refunds, cancellations, oversales, baggage, tarmac delays, discrimination, disability accommodation, and other consumer-protection matters. Complaints may be filed online or mailed to 1200 New Jersey Avenue SE, Washington, DC 20590.
For a disputed card charge, contact the credit-card issuer if appropriate after attempting to resolve the issue with Southwest. Security-screening complaints belong with TSA rather than the airline, while aviation-safety issues should be directed to the FAA. DOT also accepts complaints involving potentially unfair or deceptive frequent-flyer practices, including certain Rapid Rewards disputes.
If customer-service and regulatory channels do not resolve the dispute, review Southwest’s Contract of Carriage and any other terms governing the specific ticket, baggage service, vacation package, or transaction. Depending on the dispute and applicable terms, a passenger may consider small-claims court, another permitted legal process, or consultation with a qualified attorney. DOT itself notes that private legal action, including small-claims relief in appropriate circumstances, may be available.
