WellSpan Health
WellSpan Health
WellSpan Health is a nonprofit, physician-led integrated healthcare system based in York, Pennsylvania. It provides primary care, hospital services, emergency medicine, cancer care, cardiovascular care, orthopedics, neurosciences, behavioral health, women’s health, rehabilitation, home care, virtual services, medical education, and other healthcare throughout central Pennsylvania and northern Maryland. The organization has grown through hospital affiliations, medical-group expansion, regional partnerships, and continued investment in community-based care.
WellSpan’s historical roots extend back to healthcare institutions established in the York region in the nineteenth century. Over time, those local organizations developed into a larger integrated health system serving multiple Pennsylvania counties. Today, WellSpan operates 12 hospitals, 250+ patient-care locations, and a multispecialty medical group employing more than 2,700 physicians and advanced practice providers. Current system information reports more than 24,000 team members, making WellSpan one of the region’s largest employers.
The system is currently led by Roxanna L. Gapstur, PhD, RN, President and Chief Executive Officer. In April 2026, WellSpan announced that Gapstur plans to retire, but she will remain President and CEO until the leadership transition is completed. This means she remains the current CEO as of October 2026 rather than a former executive. WellSpan currently describes itself as an approximately $4.7 billion integrated health system serving Pennsylvania and northern Maryland.

Appointment scheduling:

For general help, call the WellSpan CareLine at 877-232-5807. This is the best starting point for patients who are not sure which department, hospital, physician office, or service should handle their question. For appointment scheduling, call 800-840-5905. Before calling, have the patient’s full name, date of birth, location of care, physician name, appointment or service date, and any relevant reference or account information ready.
Billing questions should go directly to 717-851-5005 or 877-631-4262, rather than through general hospital routing. Patients can also email WSHCustomerService@wellspan.org for billing assistance. If the issue involves care received at a specific hospital, contacting that hospital’s administration or Patient Relations team is usually more effective because the local team can review the actual encounter and medical-service history.
For complaints about clinical care, staff interactions, safety, or patient experience, WellSpan recommends first speaking with the care team while the patient is still receiving services. If the issue is not resolved, call 877-232-5807 or use WellSpan’s formal feedback process so the concern can be shared with leadership.
Complaints can involve clinical care, hospital conditions, staff behavior, billing, insurance, discharge, privacy, accessibility, communication, appointment handling, or patient safety. Collect the patient’s name, date of service, facility, physician or department, account number, bills, photographs where relevant, and records of previous discussions before escalating.
Call the WellSpan CareLine at 877-232-5807 for general complaints, or speak directly with the hospital or medical office involved. Explain the issue clearly and ask that the concern be documented. For active hospital stays, raising the problem with the care team immediately can allow a faster clinical or operational response.
Billing concerns should go to 717-851-5005 or 877-631-4262, appointment issues to the scheduling team, and care complaints to the facility’s administration or Patient Relations function. Using the department directly responsible for the service reduces unnecessary transfers and creates a clearer complaint record.
If the first employee cannot resolve the issue, ask for a department manager, nursing leader, practice manager, Patient Relations representative, or hospital administrator. Explain what was already attempted, what remains unresolved, and what outcome you are requesting. Record names, dates, and case references where available.
WellSpan offers an official online feedback form and accepts written complaints at the administration office of the hospital or entity involved. For example, WellSpan Medical Group complaints can be mailed to 45 Monument Road, Suite 200, York, PA 17403, Attn: WellSpan Medical Group Administration.
For a serious unresolved system-level matter, correspondence can be directed to
WellSpan Health
45 Monument Road, Suite 200
York, PA 17403
Include the relevant hospital or practice, dates, previous complaint history, copies of supporting documents, and the specific resolution requested.
Hospital grievances can be escalated through Patient Relations or hospital administration. Billing disputes should stay with Patient Financial Services and Customer Service, while compliance concerns can be submitted through WellSpan’s confidential compliance-reporting process. WellSpan specifically states that complaints and grievances may be made verbally, in writing, or in person and should receive a timely response.
For unresolved hospital quality or care complaints in Pennsylvania, patients may contact the Pennsylvania Department of Health. WellSpan materials list the Department’s complaint hotline as 800-254-5164. Licensing issues involving individual professionals may instead belong with the applicable state professional licensing board.
Hospital-quality concerns may also be submitted to The Joint Commission, which WellSpan materials identify as an external accreditation complaint option. Medicare beneficiaries may have additional review rights through the relevant Quality Improvement Organization, and insurance-related disputes may involve the health plan or Pennsylvania Insurance Department. The best external route depends on whether the complaint concerns care quality, payment, insurance coverage, discharge, or professional conduct.
If serious injury, malpractice, discrimination, financial harm, privacy violations, or another substantial dispute remains unresolved after internal and regulatory escalation, the patient may consider obtaining independent legal advice. Preserve medical records, bills, photographs, complaint submissions, written responses, insurer decisions, and regulator correspondence before taking formal action. Legal options depend on the facts, applicable Pennsylvania or Maryland law, and any contractual or statutory requirements.
