Municipal Credit Union
Municipal Credit Union, commonly known as MCU, is a New York-based member-owned financial cooperative serving municipal employees, public-sector workers, eligible family members, and other qualified New Yorkers. Founded in 1916, MCU was created to give New York City employees access to affordable savings and borrowing options at a time when many workers had limited access to fair financial services. Over time, the institution expanded into a full-service credit union offering checking accounts, savings products, mortgages, auto loans, personal loans, credit cards, digital banking, and other financial services.
MCU is a state-chartered, federally insured credit union rather than a commercial bank. Member deposits are federally insured by the National Credit Union Administration up to applicable limits, and MCU operates under a cooperative structure in which eligible members collectively own the institution. MCU emerged from regulatory conservatorship in February 2022, when the NCUA and New York State Department of Financial Services returned control to its members after several years of supervisory intervention.
The credit union continues to operate from New York City and serves a large membership base through branches, digital banking, mobile services, consumer lending, and residential lending. MCU’s 2025 annual reporting and 2026 membership meeting show that the organization remains focused on growth, accountability, financial inclusion, and serving working New Yorkers. MCU added tens of thousands of new members during 2025 and continues to position itself as one of the largest credit unions in the New York metropolitan area.

Eligible members can deposit checks using compatible mobile devices through the NYMCU mobile app, subject to deposit limits, holds, and account eligibility.

Digital banking includes bill-payment functionality that can help members schedule qualifying payments to service providers and other payees.
MCU provides membership to eligible New Yorkers based on employment, organizational affiliation, family relationship, and other qualification criteria. Membership begins with the required Share Account and provides access to the credit union’s broader product lineup.

The best starting point for most account, loan, card, online-banking, or membership questions is 1-844-628-6969. The line routes members through dedicated prompts for existing accounts, lending, card assistance, digital banking, and other services. Before calling, have your membership information, account type, transaction date, loan number, or card details available, but do not provide passwords or one-time codes to anyone who contacts you unexpectedly.
For more specialized lending help, MCU also publishes direct mortgage and consumer-lending specialists at its 22 Cortlandt Street office. Members with a mortgage, refinance, HELOC, auto-loan, or personal-loan question can work with a specialist or schedule an appointment. Digital-banking questions can use Option 8 or ebranch@nymcu.org, while sensitive information should be sent through the secure Message Center rather than unsecured email.
If your issue concerns a specific branch experience, begin with the branch manager and then escalate through Member Solutions if the matter remains unresolved. For card fraud or a lost card, use the dedicated lost/stolen-card process immediately rather than waiting for normal branch hours.

Complaints may involve account access, unauthorized transactions, debit or credit cards, loans, mortgage servicing, digital banking, fees, branch service, privacy, or another member experience. Before escalating, gather your member number, affected account or loan details, transaction dates, statements, screenshots, branch location, employee names where available, and records of earlier contacts.
Call 1-844-628-6969 and explain the issue to a Member Solutions representative. Provide a concise timeline, identify the affected product, and ask the representative to document the complaint. If the matter involves a transaction or fee, have the date, amount, and account type available. For lost or stolen cards, use the card-specific emergency process immediately.
Use the correct MCU department for the issue. Mortgage, auto-loan, and personal-loan questions can be routed through the lending menu, while digital-banking concerns can use Option 8. Credit-card theft or fraud should use the dedicated card contact, and branch-specific complaints should begin with local management. Using the correct department helps ensure the complaint reaches staff who can review the relevant records.
If the first representative cannot resolve the complaint, ask for a supervisor or manager to review the matter. Explain what was previously discussed, provide any reference numbers, and clearly state what outcome you are requesting. Keep notes of the representative’s name, date, time, and any promised follow-up.
For account-related matters that require documentation, use secure online banking messaging whenever possible. Members can also write to MCU at 22 Cortlandt Street, New York, NY 10007. Avoid sending sensitive personal information by ordinary email unless MCU specifically instructs you to do so through a secure process.
If the matter remains unresolved, direct formal correspondence to Municipal Credit Union, 22 Cortlandt Street, New York, NY 10007. Include your contact information, member number where appropriate, affected product, dates, prior case information, and a chronological description of the complaint. Send copies rather than original documents and keep proof of delivery.
Mortgage servicing disputes may require formal written Notices of Error or Requests for Information sent to MCU’s designated mortgage correspondence address. Card disputes, fraud matters, and other regulated account complaints may also follow specialized procedures and deadlines. Use the address or dispute instructions shown on the relevant agreement or account statement.
Because MCU is a New York state-chartered, federally insured credit union, unresolved regulatory concerns may be submitted to the New York State Department of Financial Services and, where appropriate, the National Credit Union Administration. The correct regulator depends on the issue, so include complete account records, MCU’s responses, and your requested resolution.
For unauthorized card transactions, billing disputes, or other consumer-finance issues, additional protections may exist under federal banking and card laws. Depending on the complaint, members may also use the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau or relevant state consumer-protection channels. Keep statements, receipts, correspondence, and dispute submissions organized before filing externally.
If all ordinary complaint and regulatory channels fail, review the applicable account, loan, mortgage, or credit-card agreement for formal dispute-resolution procedures. Some disputes may involve arbitration, court action, or other contractual remedies. For significant financial losses or legal questions, consider obtaining independent legal advice before taking this step.
