How to Reach a Real Person at MetLife
If you are unsure which MetLife department handles your issue, call 1-800-638-5433. The general inquiries line can help route customers to the relevant policy, claims, benefits, retirement, or other department. Have your policy or certificate number, employer name if the coverage is work-related, account information, and a brief description of the issue ready before calling.
For claims and specialized products, using the dedicated number is generally more effective. Individual life claims can use 1-800-638-5000, Group Life Claims 1-800-638-6420, disability claims 1-888-608-6665, annuity claims 1-800-638-7732, pet insurance 1-800-438-6388, and legal plans 1-800-821-6400. Customers covered through an employer should also check their MyBenefits account or benefits materials because employer-specific plans can use different service arrangements.

How to File a Complaint Against MetLife
Customers filing a complaint against MetLife should first determine which insurance policy, benefit, claim, annuity, retirement product, legal plan, pet policy, or other MetLife service is involved. Keep the policy or certificate number, claim number, employer name where applicable, dates, benefit statements, correspondence, denial letters, invoices, and records of previous calls. Because MetLife operates many specialized service units, identifying the correct product and issuing company is important before escalating a complaint.
Step 1: Contact the Appropriate MetLife Customer Service Department
Start with the department responsible for your product. If you are unsure where to begin, call 1-800-638-5433. For life insurance, retirement, disability, pet insurance, legal plans, or other specialized products, use the relevant dedicated number listed above. Explain the problem clearly, provide your account or policy information, and ask the representative to document the concern. Request a case, claim, or reference number where available and keep a record of the representative’s name and the date of the call.
Step 2: Request Claim or Supervisor Review
If the first representative cannot resolve the issue, request review by a supervisor, claims specialist, appeals unit, or other appropriate team. For denied or disputed claims, carefully review the explanation of benefits, denial letter, claim instructions, and appeal rights provided with your plan. Submit requested supporting documents within any applicable deadline and keep copies of everything sent. Ask for confirmation that the appeal or escalation was received and retain the new case or appeal reference number.
Step 3: Use the Formal Appeal or Grievance Process
Insurance and employee-benefit disputes can have formal appeal requirements established by the policy, employer plan, or applicable law. Follow the appeal instructions included in your denial notice or benefit documentation rather than relying only on general Customer Service. Include medical records, employment documents, bills, beneficiary information, or other evidence relevant to the complaint. If the coverage is employer sponsored, the employer’s benefits administrator may also need to participate in the process.
Step 4: Send Formal Written Correspondence to MetLife Headquarters
For a serious unresolved corporate complaint, written correspondence can be directed to MetLife, Inc., 200 Park Avenue, New York, NY 10166. Include your full contact information, relevant MetLife policy or account details, claim and complaint numbers, previous support contacts, important dates, and a clear chronological explanation of the issue. Attach copies rather than originals of supporting records and clearly describe the resolution you are seeking. Keep a copy of the letter and proof of mailing or delivery.
Step 5: Contact the Appropriate Insurance or Benefits Regulator if Necessary
If the issue remains unresolved, the appropriate external complaint process depends on the product. Insurance complaints can generally be submitted to the insurance department in the state that regulates the policy, while employer-sponsored benefit disputes may involve different federal or state oversight depending on the plan. Retirement, securities, legal-plan, privacy, and other complaints can also have different regulators. Use the company name shown on your policy or benefit certificate and keep all denial letters, claim files, correspondence, and appeal decisions before escalating externally.
