Jewel-Osco (universally known throughout Chicagoland simply as “Jewel”) is the dominant regional supermarket and pharmacy chain of the Greater Chicago metropolitan area — a deeply woven institutional fixture of Illinois grocery retail for more than 125 years, operating 188–189 stores across northern, central, and western Illinois; eastern Iowa; and portions of northwest Indiana. Jewel-Osco traces its origins to 1899 when Frank Vernon Skiff and Frank Ross founded the Jewel Tea Company in Chicago — a door-to-door tea and coffee delivery operation that evolved into a grocery store chain bearing the Jewel name.
