How to File a Complaint Against Allstate
Step 1 — Gather Your Documentation
Before filing a complaint, gather all relevant documents including your policy number, claim number, dates of all communications, names of agents or representatives you spoke with, copies of emails or letters, and any photos or evidence related to your issue. Having everything organized before you contact Allstate significantly speeds up the resolution process.
Step 2 — Contact Your Allstate Agent or Claims Adjuster
Start by contacting the Allstate agent who handles your policy or the claims adjuster assigned to your case. Many disputes related to billing errors, coverage questions, or claim delays can be resolved directly at this level without needing to escalate further. Be clear about what the issue is and what resolution you are looking for.
Step 3 — Call Allstate Customer Service
If your agent or adjuster cannot resolve the issue, call Allstate’s customer service team at 1-800-255-7828. Explain your complaint clearly, provide your policy number, and reference any previous communications. Ask for your complaint to be formally logged and request a case or reference number. Customer service representatives are available 24/7.
Step 4 — Escalate to a Supervisor
If the customer service representative is unable to resolve your complaint, ask to be escalated to a supervisor or a member of Allstate’s Customer Resolution Department. Supervisors have greater authority to review decisions, approve exceptions, and expedite stalled claims. Keep a record of the supervisor’s name and the outcome of your conversation.
Step 5 — Submit a Written Formal Complaint
If phone escalations have not produced a satisfactory result, send a formal written complaint to Allstate’s corporate headquarters at 2775 Sanders Road, Northbrook, IL 60062. Your letter must include your full name, address, policy number, a detailed description of the issue, dates and names of everyone you have spoken with, copies of all supporting documentation, and a clear statement of the resolution you are requesting. Written complaints typically receive a response within 7 to 14 business days.
Step 6 — File a Complaint With Your State Insurance Department
If Allstate fails to resolve your complaint internally, file a formal complaint with your state’s Department of Insurance. Every U.S. state has a regulatory body that oversees insurance companies and has the authority to investigate consumer complaints against insurers. Filing a state complaint puts regulatory pressure on Allstate to respond and resolve the matter. You can find your state’s insurance department contact information at the National Association of Insurance Commissioners website at www.naic.org.
Step 7 — File a BBB Complaint
As an additional option, file a public complaint with the Better Business Bureau at www.bbb.org. Allstate’s corporate office is registered with the BBB and a public complaint typically prompts a faster response from the company. The BBB mediates between you and Allstate and expects a business response within 14 days of the complaint being filed.
